MA'ALAEA, MAUI, HI -- Pacific Whale Foundation's bi-monthly Making Waves Lecture Series will present a free talk on rescuing entangled humpback whales off Maui and preventing vessel-whale collisions. Titled "Watch Out, Whales About," the presentation will take place on Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Pacific Whale Foundation's Discovery Center at the Ma'alaea Harbor Shops. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Ed Lyman, Resource Protection Manager and Large Whale Entanglement Response Coordinator at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will offer a slide and video presentation on efforts in Hawaii to rescue humpback whales that are entangled. "If you've ever wondered how rescuers cut away rope, net and line from 40-ton animals, you'll find this presentation to be fascinating," says Lauren Campbell, Conservation Manager at Pacific Whale Foundation and coordinator of the Making Waves Lecture Series Program. "You'll also learn about the First Responder training offered to local boaters and the true community effort that goes into rescuing entangled whales."
The evening will also include a presentation by Greg Kaufman, Pacific Whale Foundation Founder and Executive Director on the "Be Whale Aware" program to help prevent vessel-whale collisions. Kaufman will also be presenting observations from Pacific Whale Foundation's research team from its study relating to the potential for vessel-whale collisions and unexpected encounters with whales off the coast of Maui.
